Jet Simulations for the TDR

This is a working area: changes are possible

Last modified: April 8, 1998
On this page you can found information about simulations and studies, done at MPI in 1996, for the ATLAS "Calorimeter Performance" Technical Design Report (CERN/LHCC/96_40).

Details of these studies are summarized in the ATLAS HEC-Note-047 "Jet Energy Measurements in the End-Cap Region of ATLAS".

ATLAS software:
Release 96_7 (/home/iws109a1/atlas/lhc/96_7 - only for IBMRT platform):
for jet scans at |eta|=2.45
Release 96_9 (/home/iws109a1/atlas/lhc/96_9 - for IBMRT and ALPHA platforms):
for jet scans at |eta|=2.75 and 3.05

Examples of macros to run jobs and of corresponding datacards: /home/iws109a1/atlas/lhc/96_?/job

Events: dijet (d-dbar) at |eta|=2.45, 2.75 and 3.05
with energy E(jet)= 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 GeV
Total energy in an event - 2 E(jet)

Event generation with ATGEN: 500 events per energy point. See an example of used datacards.

Generated data (banks KINE): /at/data1/kiryunin/jets_atgen_data/jet*_*.data.gz

Detector simulation:

Simulations are done for two configurations of calorimeters:
Simulated data (banks GEOM, KINE, HITS, DIGI) are kept on tapes at MPI.

jet????.data - jets at |eta|=2.45, without magnetic field
jet????m.data - jets at |eta|=2.45, with magnetic field
jet????m2.75.data - jets at |eta|=2.75, with magnetic field
jet????m3.05.data - jets at |eta|=3.05, with magnetic field

File size, MBytes
Jet energy, GeV Eta=2.45 (no field) Eta=2.45 Eta=2.75 Eta=3.05
100 36.8 36.6 41.2 43.6
200 48.3 48.5 56.6 61.9
500 72.3 72.2 85.3 105.2
1000 94.3 97.4 121.6 159.2
2000 130.7 133.7 178.8 235.0

CPU time, used for jet simulations at different MPI computers

Main results, concerning jet energy resolution and maximal signal expected in the HEC, can be found in the updated version of transparencies (shown by A.Kiryunin during the MPI-HEC group meeting on December 13, 1996).
